Darcy Bullock receives Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award

Darcy Bullock, Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), has been awarded the prestigious 2022 Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

Darcy Bullock, Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP), has been awarded the prestigious 2022 Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE). The purpose of this award is to recognize an educator (typically a professor) who has made an outstanding contribution to the transportation profession by relating academic studies to the actual practice of transportation. The award seeks to recognize transportation educators that help their students advance their professional development, enhance their opportunities to network with practicing transportation professionals, and become active participants in the profession.

Dr. Bullock received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Vermont in 1987. He received an M.S. in 1988 and a Ph.D. in 1992 in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Bullock is a Registered Professional Engineer in Indiana and has 30 years of experience working closely with academia, transportation agencies, and private sector partners in the area of transportation systems and big data. On the traffic operations side, he is currently leading a 12- state pooled fund study to develop scalable and anonymized traffic signal systems performance measures using connected vehicle data.

Bullock’s work has been recognized by 13 best paper awards from the Transportation Research Board Committees (TRB) on Traffic Signal Systems and Highway Work Zones. The impact of his research and engagement activities has been recognized by the TRB Grant Mickle Award, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Huber Award, ASCE Wellington Best Paper Award, the Institute of Transportation Engineers Management and Operations Council Project Achievement Award, the American Association of State Transportation and Highway Officials (AASHTO) Presidents Award for performance excellence, the Kellogg Foundation Award for engagement, and 2019 testimony for the US House Subcommittee on Research and Technology.
