New research findings revealing the structure of a sea creature's impact-resistant appendage are inspiring development of advanced materials for possible applications in body armor, helmets and components for buildings and cars.

Dr. Baki Ozturk (PhD '03) has been serving as the founding head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Hacettepe University (Ankara, Turkey) since 2013.

On May 9, nineteen students from Civil, Mechanical, Industrial and Construction Engineering embarked on a 12-day trip led by Professor Darcy Bullock to study 21st Century European multi-modal Transportation Infrastructure in London, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich.

CE senior Nathan Shellhamer won the "dream" prize in ASCE's Dream Big Contest - a trip for two to an international location for the filming of Dream Big, the ASCE giant-screen movie coming in 2017. Darcy Bullock, Professor of Civil Engineering, has been given the Faculty Engagement Fellow Award from Purdue University's Office of Engagement. Prof. Bullock is recognized for his work with the Indiana Department of Transportation, specifically for his efforts to help engineers identify critical research problems and produce solutions.

Arif Mohaimin Sadri, a doctoral candidate in the transportation area advised by Prof. Satish Ukkusuri, is the recipient of the 2016 Excellence in Research Award from the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs, Purdue University for his successful interdisciplinary project titled as "The Role of Social Capital, Personal Networks, & Early Responders in Post-disaster Recovery."

Civil Engineering graduate student Aishwarya Puranam has been selected to receive the ACI Presidents' Fellowship for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Professor Chad Jafvert, along with three co-authors including two PhD alumni, were awarded a 2015 Scientific and Technological Achievement Award (Honorable Mention) from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for authorship of a paper entitled: "Photoreactivity of Unfunctionalized Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes Involving Hydroxyl Radical: Chiral dependency and Surface Coating Effect," published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

First built in the 1960s, the tow tank in the basement of Hampton Hall will be renovated by the end of 2016. According to Cary Troy, associate professor of civil engineering, the facility, owned by civil engineering's hydraulic and hydrologic engineering department, was built along with the building itself. It is designed to tow objects through a tank of water using a carriage at the top, which would allow researchers to measure, for example, the drag force from the fluid to the object.

CE grad student Jessica Eisma has been offered a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant for the 2016-17 academic year. She will travel to Tanzania to research on the ecological impact of an ancient water capture and storage technology that is recognized as efficient for Tanzanian ecosystems: sand dams.

PhD candidate Chul Min Yeum and Professor Shirley Dyke have been awarded the 2015 Hojjat Adeli Award for Innovation in Computing.

Ms. Chisaphat Supunyachotsakul, a doctoral candidate in the geomatics area advised by Prof. James Bethel, is the recipient of the 2016 Robert E. Altenhofen Memorial Scholarship.

Purdue's third annual Day of Giving lived up to its "Bigger and Better" theme, raising a record $18.3 million from 12,872 donations in 24 hours - and claiming, for the second year running, the record for most dollars raised for higher education through a single-day campaign. This year, the Lyles School of Civil Engineering raised a total of $278,602 from 272 individual gifts.

Tariq U. Saeed, a graduate student of Transportation Engineering working in the research group of Professor Samuel Labi, has been chosen to receive a spring 2016 PCCRC graduate student travel grant.

Dr. Nadia Gkritza was chosen as the first-ever recipient of the CE Outstanding Mentor of Engineering Graduate Students award, an annual award sponsored by the College of Engineering. The goal of the award is to recognize an outstanding faculty member in each school and to share their best practices with young faculty members.

On Wednesday, April 13th, the Lyles School of Civil Engineering hosted the German America Chamber of Commerce for a seminar on the innovation of energy efficiency in transportation systems. The event kick-off was a poster session in the Woods Commons to highlight some active research projects and give students an opportunity to engage with German transportation specialists.

Nader Naderpajouh, Visiting Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management, has been recognized as an outstanding reviewer by the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering. He was selected based on his diligent reviews and constructive comments throughout 2015 to ensure the integrity of the research that is published in the areas associated with the contemporary issues on management and leadership in engineering.

Lisa Lorena Losada Rojas, an undergraduate student from Colombia who was hosted here at Purdue last year through the Purdue-Colombia Institute, has been recognized for having the best thesis in her field at the National University of Colombia.
