Professor Giulia Viggiani of the University of Cambridge will deliver the Leonards Lecture on Engineering Frozen Ground: Understanding the Behavior of Soil on Freezing and Thawing.

Video: Upgrading old buildings with earthquake-proof tech

Akanshu Sharma, the Jack and Kay Hockema Associate Professor in Civil Engineering, explains that most older buildings were not built with earthquakes in mind and how a new construction method could help reinforce them. At Bowen Lab, Sharma is testing a two-story structure meant to mimic buildings constructed before earthquake codes went into effect.

Samuel Labi receives ASCE Wilbur S. Smith Award

The Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE has announced Samuel Labi, Professor of Civil Engineering, as the 2025 recipient of the Wilbur S. Smith Award. This award is given to a person who has made "special contributions to the enhancement of the civil engineer's role in highway engineering."
