The University of Michigan has awarded AAE professor and former AAE head Tom Shih with a Merit Award from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The award is part of University of Michigan Engineering's annual alumni recognition program. The departmental awards category is specifically to honor UM alumni "who personify the College’s tradition of excellence and who have achieved significant accomplishments in their professional lives."

Shih received both his master's and PhD degrees from UM in mechanical engineering. He has previously received research awards from AIAA, and is a fellow of both AIAA and ASME.

He said this award came as a surprise.

"I am extremely honored and humbled to receive this award. I truly never expected it. Now, I need to work harder to be more worthy," Shih says.
