Purdue School of Nuclear Engineering recently received notification of renewal of its operating license for the Purdue University Reactor Number One, or PUR-1.

The Facility Operating License, issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, enables the reactor to operate for teaching, research, and public outreach through November 2036.

PUR-1 is the first and only nuclear reactor operating in Indiana. Its serves as a valuable resource for teaching Nuclear Engineering students about the fundamentals of reactor physics and operation. Purdue also uses PUR-1 as a neutron source for activation to support disciplines across campus including engineering, health science, chemistry, pharmacy, agriculture, biology, and nanotechnology.

Dr. Robert Bean is the reactor’s laboratory Director, and he is supported by Clive Townsend, Reactor Supervisor/Assistant Lab Director and David Storz, Electronics Technician.
