IE's Yu She Co-principal Investigator of Robotics Project with University of Arkansas

How do you alleviate the strain on poultry processing plants when workers become ill during a pandemic? That is the problem being addressed by assistant professor of industrial engineering, Yu She, a co-principal investigator of a project that will aid in the hanging of raw chickens in processing plants.

Yu She is a co-principal investigator in a robotics project for the poultry industry that is led by faculty at the University of Arkansas.

The project is led by principal investigator Dongyi Wang, assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.  Wan Shou, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Arkansas is listed as an additional co-PI, along with She.

The team of researchers are working to design a system that will use a 3D imaging system that will guide robotic arms to grasp raw chicken that have gone through the slaughtering and evisceration process, and hang them on the conveyor line for deboning, wing-cutting and packing.

Professor She is working to develop control and planning algorithms for a dual arm system that will grasp and hang the chicken, while Shou will design tactile sensors and robotic hands that will ensure that the robot can adjust the grip without damaging the quality of the meat.

The project is funded jointly by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
