Cai and Karakaya Project Selected for Innovation Grant Award

The project, led by Hua Cai and Erhan Karakaya, is aimed at developing an AI-powered “TA” Tool for IE 343.

What do you do when you have a large undergraduate course and students require more timely feedback and customized learning assistance? In spite of existing efforts, this is the challenge faced in IE 343 (Engineering Economics).  Investigators from Purdue’s School of Industrial Engineering are working to solve this problem with the use of an AI-powered "TA" tool.

Associate professor Hua Cai, and visiting assistant professor Erhan Karakaya, co-principal investigators of the Innovation Grant Award winning project.

Hua Cai, associate professor of industrial engineering (joint appointment with Environmental & Ecological Engineering), along with visiting assistant professor Erhan Karakaya, were recently honored with an Innovation Grant Award for their project aimed at providing students with more customized examples and feedback through the use of AI.

The project uses Gradescope data to predict causes of incorrect answers and provide feedback accordingly. In addition to this, a website interface will be developed to gather student submission information as well as feedback in order to continuously improve this tool. The tool is being tested during the fall semester in the hopes that it can be scaled for use in other areas.
