Dadi Xing receives QSR Best Student Paper Finalist Award at INFORMS 2014

At this year’s INFORMS conference in San Francisco, Dadi Xing received the Quality, Statistics, and Reliability Section’s Best Student Paper Finalist Award. Dadi’s paper, “Supersaturated Design via Lasso” was co-authored by Industrial Engineering Professor Hong Wan and Statistics Professor Yu Zhu.

IE Alumnus Juan Ernesto de Bedout to Participate in the 2014 Old Masters Program

Created in 1950, the Old Masters Program has been a long-standing tradition in which distinguished professionals are brought to Purdue’s campus to share their professional and personal experiences and inspire leadership for a lifetime. During the program, Old Masters participate in classroom talks, student organization receptions, and social activities. Those selected as Old Masters are exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions in their professional fields. Encompassing a mix of Purdue alumni and friends, Old Masters possess a desire to share leadership philosophies and life experiences with Purdue students.

Jocelyn Dunn - IE PhD Student has been selected to be part of the HI-SEAS Mission

The six astronaut-like crew members of the next Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (HI-SEAS) mission starting October 15 will be isolated in their dome habitat for eight months. This mission is twice as long as any previously completed at the Hawaii site, and second only to Russia’s Mars500 experiment in total duration. During the HI-SEAS mission, Jocelyn will monitor habitat systems data and develop analytics for optimizing crew schedules and mission performance.

Dr. Brad Duerstock Developing Technology for Students with Disabilities

From College to Careers is a program intended to develop the technology to allow students with physical disabilities to have careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The program will use robots controlled by voice commands and hand gestures to assist disabled students and researchers in laboratories.

IE Alumni - Mica R. Endsley to be Keynote Speaker at upcoming IIE Annual Conference

Mica R. Endsley is the chief scientist of the U.S. Air Force. She serves as the chief scientific adviser to the chief of staff and secretary of the Air Force and provides assessments on a wide range of scientific and technical issues affecting the Air Force mission. The IIE Annual Conference will be held in Montreal – May 31 to June 3, 2014.

Congratulations to Professor Ji Soo Yi on his promotion to Associate Professor with tenure. The School of Industrial Engineering is delighted to have Ji Soo join the senior leadership of the school, and wish him a long and productive career at Purdue.

Robots Coming to the Workplace?

Robotics students at Purdue are trying to find new ways robots can assist people in the workplace.

In a joint venture between the schools of Engineering and Technology, students and faculty are programming a robot to pick up surgical tools and hand them to the doctor. The Baxter robot was designed by the company Rethink Robotics.
