Fire
A FIRE ALARM is an alarm that goes off IN THE BUILDING. It is a shrill alarm accompanied by flashing lights in most locations. In the case of a FIRE ALARM – you will EVACUATE THE BUILDING, as follows:
- Calmly proceed to the nearest exit.
- Do not use the elevators.
- Take your personal belongings if possible.
- Assist those who need help, if possible.
- Once outside, congregate at Stewart Center 1st Floor, East entrance (up the stairs from the Union).
- Stay at the Stewart Center until instructed to leave.
- Obey all emergency personnel.
Shelter in Place
A SHELTER IN PLACE ALARM is an alarm that goes off OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. It is a siren/horn. In the case of a SHELTER IN PLACE ALARM – you will REMAIN IN THE BUILDING, as follows:
- Move to a room or hallway in the basement of the building.
- The basement is accessed through the center stairwell from the first floor of Grissom.
- Do not use the elevators.
- Take your personal belongings if possible.
- Assist those who need help, if possible.
- Stay in the shelter location until instructed to leave.
- Obey all emergency personnel.
Other Emergencies
If there is an EMERGENCY IN THE CLASSROOM, dial 911 using the classroom phone and obey the instructions of emergency personnel – STAY ON THE PHONE UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO OTHERWISE.
A FIRE OR CHEMICAL RELEASE may cause a fire alarm. An INTRUDER, a TORNADO, or a TERRORIST ACT may cause a SHELTER IN PLACE alarm.
