IE PhD Student Earns Multiple Awards
Obuseh earned both the best student paper and the best track paper for the work systems track for the paper titled "A Sensor-Based Framework for Layout and Workflow Assessment in Surgical Operating Rooms." The paper has also been accepted for publication in Applied Ergonomics. The research takes a different approach from standard observational studies that look into layout and workflow of operating teams. Instead this research leverages motion and position sensors to get a better understanding of layout and workflows within the operating room. Obuseh credits her "awesome collaborators", as well as her very supportive advisor, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering, Denny Yu.
"I feel grateful to have an advisor who has been very supportive of my work and career growth."
As Obuseh was unable to attend the IISE Conference & Expo this year due to a research internship at Google, Yu attended and presented the work on her behalf.
The awards don't stop there for Obuseh. Marian has also been honored as an Aspirations in Computing Collegiate Award Recipient by the National Center for Women & Information Technology. The award recognizes "technical projects that demonstrate a high level of creativity and potential impact." The project "Sensor-based Surgical Data Science and Human Factors in Robotic-Assisted Surgeries" provides a high level synopsis of Obuseh's PhD work on using sensors "to better understand the physical and cognitive effects of integrating robotic technologies into operating rooms.
This summer Obuseh is working as a research intern in the wearables user experience key performance indicator team at Google, working to identify how good engineering requirements need to be to make technologies better for users.
