We knew this semester was going to be full of challenges. Our First-Year Engineering students in the School of Engineering Education, most living independently for the first time in their lives, had nothing to compare this first semester to. They are now college students wanting to do all that they’ve heard about, like hanging out with classmates between and after classes. Yet they find themselves again in an environment where their rooms are safe for isolation – both from the pandemic and social interaction that they have craved since the spring of their senior year of high school – here on campus and in their homes attending Purdue remotely. How do we bridge the gap so our remote students feel like a college student and part of our program? How do we engage our campus students with the limitations and safety protocols in place? How do we bring us together?

Ashley Foltz, a senior in our Multidisciplinary Engineering Degree Program, was becoming a humanitarian engineer before she even knew it was an option to pursue. Her world travels, including a fateful semester abroad to Singapore, helped her discover her pathway. Lucky for us, Ashley's journey led her to our Humanitarian Engineering concentration. "Humanitarian Engineering was the perfect way to combine my engineering skills with my interests for anthropology and all things humanitarian."

When COVID-19 shut down America, Danielle Render (T’17, EnE’17) was ready. Her custom clothing company Divine Creations, known by the brand name DVN Co., had already seen the worst before word ever hit American media. She started feeling the pinch in January because DVN’s raw materials come from China, where the first cases of coronavirus were identified. But Render is confident that DVN will survive, thanks to her ability to solve problems — one of many skills she learned from the Purdue multidisciplinary engineering program.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Friday (Aug. 7) ratified seven faculty appointments, approved a new degree program and awarded two posthumous bachelor’s degrees. Trustees also approved the renaming of a program and issued resolutions of appreciation for friends of the university.

The School of Engineering Education and the Department of Theatre in the Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University hosted the second Symposium on Education in Entertainment and Engineering event online July 23-24, 2020, bringing together experts on education in entertainment and engineering.

In late May, after the Spring semester ended and everyone was adjusting to their new norms living with the stay-at-home orders, curiosity and questions about classroom instruction began to be exchanged. “So, what did you end up doing?” Luckily, in a college town the size of West Lafayette, faculty are neighbors. While checking in with each other, Dr. Alice Pawley, an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering Education, had a thought that if they were talking about it in their own neighborhood, surely there were more wondering about what others did to finish the semester?

Originally scheduled to be in Montreal, the School of Engineering Education faculty and graduate students participated virtually for this year’s American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference. Over half of our graduate students were participants with 33 authors of papers presented virtually.

Dr. Alice Pawley, Associate Professor of Engineering Education, was honored last week at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference with the 2020 Sterling Olmsted Award. This is the highest award given by the ASEE Liberal Education/Engineering & Society Division (LEES). The award "honors those who have made distinguished contributions to the development and teaching of liberal arts in engineering education."

"So, what did you end up doing?" A COVID-19 Teaching Salon Zoom Discussion hosted by the faculty of the School of Engineering Education will take place on Friday, June 12, 2020, 1:00-2:00 PM EDT. Instructors talk with instructors about lessons learned (good, bad, and ugly) putting their courses online in Spring 2020, and share thoughts about how to do it better in the future.

In March, instructors and students alike were quickly adapting to online instruction and learning. We reached out at the end of the semester to our First-Year Engineering students to share their stories of challenges, milestones, and wins. We quickly learned that our students took full advantage of the many tools and resources provided to them. With the support of our instructional teams and their own support systems, students kept their Boilermaker spirit no matter where they were and what obstacles stood before them.
