Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE

Hopefully you are adjusting to the spring schedule and staying warm. I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe January is almost over. It is time for the spring career fairs to start. There are two events coming up soon I’d like you to think about attending on January 30th (Co-op Days) and February 6th and 7th (Expo).

Expo

Expo is Tuesday February 6th and 7th and will be hybrid (virtual and in person). In person will be on February 6th from 8am to 3pm at the CoRec and the virtual day will be on February 7th from 10am to 4pm. They will be using the career fair plus app like IR did in the fall and company information is up! They have not put up the specific company seminars yet-there will be both virtual seminars (no dates yet given, but it is on the website) and in person (February 5th). The more face time and contact you have with the company, the better. Make sure to go to seminars if you can.

Appointments are open for EXPO! Please note, not all companies have appointments, and some companies have “group seminars”. Just something to think about, I heard that at least several of the companies with “group seminars” didn’t show and when they didn’t you didn’t get individual time with a company rep like you would if you waited in the line. I suggest to maximize your time, you skip the group seminars on the day of the career fair and just stand in line if you want to speak with those companies to get that one on one time. If they have individual appointments, sign up for those, but I don’t think a seminar during the career fair is the best way for you to maximize your time getting a job. Attend the company seminar before the career though as they keep track of who attends.

There is also a Prep Night to help you prepare for EXPO on February 1st from 5:30-8:40pm in PMU North and South Ballrooms where they give you the opportunity to practice your interview skills and elevator pitch among other things.

Expo is the largest Purdue career fair in the spring semester. Remember that usually there are some companies that have listed EEE as an option, but there are also good companies that don’t have EEE selected. To enhance your job search, look for companies seeking Environmental Health Sciences, Civil Engineering, etc. and see if they do environmental work.  Many do!  More information is found in the Handbook for Expo.

Co-op Days

The Co-op Days Career Event is on Tuesday January 30th. It will be held in the North and South Ballrooms of the Union from 10am to 4pm. Although this career fair is primarily focused on co-ops, there are usually internship and permanent opportunities available. Have you thought about co-op? It is a great way to gain substantial experience as a student. Typically for co-ops, only freshman and sophomores are applicable.  Internship opportunities generally are open to all students. Co-ops have changed at Purdue quite a bit. Many of the environmental opportunities list one or two sessions with at least one being in the summer.  From a quick check, there are 14 companies with environmental opportunities, 5 are open to CPT, which is applicable to international students. To search for the companies and opportunities, go to career fair plus and look for the “Co-op Days”.  Filter by “majors”.  For some reason, there are two listings for EEE (Environ & Ecolog ENGR AND Eviron & Ecolog ENGR). There are different opportunities listed in both—so please select both options. There are also environmental opportunities under Environ & Natl Resources Engr, so select that major too to see more opportunities. IF you really don’t want to do a coop, they may also be open to an internship opportunity. For coop, you only have to work twice for one company, and another time for a different company (3 rotations min) so you might be doing this naturally. There is also a good networking event prior to the fair on Jan 29th from 6-8:30pm in PMU North Ballroom. Networking events are a great way to connect with company representatives in a more relaxed setting.
