Davidson School of Chemical Engineering undergraduate students were recently awarded six Co-Op scholarships for 2021, including five scholarships named for Purdue Chemical Engineering alumnus William Nelson (BSChE ’74, MSChE ’75) and his wife, Linda.

William and Linda Nelson have been long-standing generous supporters of Purdue’s Co-op Program. William (Bill) is a graduate from Purdue University in 1974 earning a BS, and a year later, MS in Chemical Engineering. An endowment fund was established by Bill and Linda November of 2011, and amended December 2017. The purpose of the amendment was to encourage participation in Co-op and reduce the student’s time to graduate. Steps to establish, support and maintain this goal resulted in the creation of annual scholarships to Co-op students. Additionally, incentive grants for instructors offering on-campus and/or online courses for Co-op students have been generated in support.

2021 recipients of the William and Linda Nelson Scholarship include five students from Chemical Engineering:

  • Madison Bird – FLEX Co-Op with Thermo Fisher Scientific
  • Rithika Athreya – 5-term Co-Op with Procter & Gamble
  • Justin Groothuis – 5-term Co-Op with Catalent Biologics
  • Christian Ibrahim – 3-term Co-Op with Dow Chemical
  • Eleanor Clifton – 3-term Co-Op with Eastman Chemical Company

These students’ names will be added to the William & Linda Nelson Scholarship plaque, located outside of the Office of Professional Practice office suite, in the A.A. Potter Engineering Center.

Chemical Engineering undergraduate Alex Dobbins, 5-term Co-Op with Vantage Oleochemicals, was awarded a scholarship through the OPP’s Employer Scholarship Fund, made possible by the generous contributions of different Co-Op employers.
