In Memoriam – Professor Robert Squires (1935-2011)
Professor Robert Squires (born 1935) passed away on November 6, 2011.
Professor Squires received his BSChE degree from RPI (1957), and MSE (1958), MS Math (1960) and PhD (1963) degrees from the University of Michigan, under the direction of the well-known catalysis scientist Prof. G. Parravano. He joined the School of Chemical Engineering faculty in 1962, developed and maintained an active and visible research program in catalysis, and reached Emeritus status in December 2004. He coordinated the ChE’s co-op program from 1982 until his retirement.
Professor Squires was a legendary teacher and received the School of Chemical Engineering Shreve Prize for outstanding undergraduate teaching six times, the College’s Potter award twice, and the University highest teaching award in 1981 (then Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award, now the Murphy Award). Nationally, for his outstanding teaching, Professor Squires received the ASEE Western Electric Award in 1977 and the CMA’s Catalyst Award in 1985.
Professor Squires and his wife Carol cared deeply for students and invited them regularly to their home for informal evening conversation and snacks. Many of our alumni recall these visits vividly and fondly – they made a lasting impression.
Professor Squires will be sorely missed by family members, and countless admiring students, staff, and faculty colleagues.
