1940s

  • Paul Oreffice (1949), aged 96, is reportedly doing well.

 

1950s

  • Walter Heckelmann (1951) spends his time exercising, playing bridge, attending bible studies and fellowship dinners, meeting people, and getting acquainted.
  • Bob Bringer (1952 BS, 1956 PhD) passed away April 29, 2023.
  • John Mayne (1958  is now retired and resides in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA.
  • Leonard Fabiano (1958) has been inducted as an AIChE Fellow and serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Max Downham (1958) continues to serve as the Executive Director of the International College of Surgeons, managing various responsibilities, including overseeing the International Museum of Surgical Science. He has also traveled to Bangladesh, Ankara, Turkey, and Geneva, Switzerland for World Health Organization board meetings over the past year.

 

1960s

  • Thomas Huseby (1960) retired from Bell Labs and Lucent in 1997 and joined Applied Innovation’s Board of Directors for the next 12 years. In retirement, he and his wife Marilyn Edmier Huseby (Purdue class of 1960) have lived in Sarasota, FL. They are the parents of Heidi Huseby Stater (Purdue class of 1995).
  • James Julian (1963) retired from his career as a chemical engineer, is enjoying his golden years and has 11 great grandchildren.
  • David Boles (1966) completed the design and fabrication of a land speed streamliner. This project took about 15 years to complete, involving welding, metal shaping, wiring, and composite work. The streamliner was successfully run in a one-mile event in Blytheville, AK, reaching a speed of 162 mph.
  • Mike Medlock (1967) retired from National Starch & Chemical Corp after 32 years.
  • Ronald Kahney (1962) retired on January 1, 2000. He now lives in Kirkwood, MO.
  • John Rak (1968) worked with Arco Products Company from 1968 to 1999. He held various positions, including Director of Marketing and Legislative Affairs. Afterward, he served as Associate Director of Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services Los Angeles from 2002 to 2007 and as Director of Advancement for Ventura County Catholic Charities from 2007 to 2014. John Rak retired in 2014 after a successful career as Director of Advancement for Ventura County Catholic Charities. He currently resides in Westfield, IN.

1970s

  • Martin Ferman (1970) plans to retire spring 2024 after eight years of part-time consulting on three research projects at Ford.
  • Larry Bowler (1971) is retired from GE/SABIC but is currently working part-time for Baker Engineering and Risk as a Principal Consultant specializing in Process Safety and Risk Management.
  • Jerry Spillane (1971) is enjoying retirement.
  • Steve Swanson (1971 BS, 1972 MS, 1975 PhD) passed away March 22, 2022.
  • Vilas Patwardhan (1971) is currently engaged in a project focused on finding efficient solutions for huge systems of linear algebraic equations.
  • Greg Bates (1972) retired in 2011.
  • Bob Gilewski (1973) retired in April 2020.
  • Dana Mirkin (1973) is retired.
  • Frank Hearl (1974) retired at the end of December 2022 after a long career at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) within the CDC.
  • Cliff Kowall (1974) is actively engaged in research with a team from the University of Pittsburgh and Oregon State University. He recently published a paper in the Chemical Engineering Journal and is involved in various activities related to the AICHE and the DOE/AICHE RAPID Manufacturing Institute. He is a regular lecturer at University of Pittsburgh, teaching ChE professional ethics, sustainability and process Intensification. He also teaches chemistry and physics labs at Notre Dame College.  
  • James (Jim) Simnick (1974 BSChE, 1979 PhD ChE) retired from BP after 41 years and now runs Simnick Consulting LLC. He remains active in the ASTM standards organization.
  • Thomas Eckel (1975) remains retired and is dedicated to completing the comprehensive history of the Purdue Cheerleading program spanning its first 100 years.
  • David Silarski (1975) was honored as an AIChE Fellow in October 2023.
  • Michael Armbrester (1976) has been retired since 2012.
  • Mark Russell (1976 BSCHE, 1980 Ph.D. CHE) has had a career spanning positions at Shell, DuPont, and Chemours. He retired as a Technical Fellow in 2016.

  • William Hermes (1977) retired from Oak Ridge National Lab as senior staff in Chemical Engineering/Project Management in 2017.

  • Andy Mosier (1978) was inducted into the Purdue Co-Op Hall of Fame in October 2023.
  • Thelma Jean Day (1979) is now retired and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren.
  • Kenneth Krause (1979) is retired and serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Ocean Isle Museum Foundation. He has also achieved a Level 3 Certification from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust.
  • Dwight Thompson (1979) served as chair of the Brown County Community Foundation board in 2022 and 2023, and recognizes the crucial role these organizations play in enhancing the well-being of local citizens.

 

1980s

  • Richard D'Ardenne (1980) assumed the role of Director of Engineering at ION Clean Energy in Boulder, CO, effective January 1, 2023, overseeing the engineering scope of ION's carbon capture technology offerings.
  • David Grubbs (1980) has been serving as a staff cardiologist at the Wilmington Delaware Veterans Hospital since July 2020.
  • Jenny McComb (1980) retired from Texas Instruments and relocated to the Chicago area.
  • Jeff Paul (1980) has retired.
  • Francis Stack (1980) retired in April 2022 after dedicating 37 years to Forest City Technologies, Inc.
  • Andy Steinhubl (1980): The Center convened a group of leading energy company sponsors, and they successfully submitted a proposal for a Hydrogen Hub in Greater Houston. This is one of seven hubs designated by the DOE across the country.
  • Mark Cheesman (1981) has been working for Calumet Specialty Products in Houston, TX, in Corporate HSE since 2016, focusing on renewable diesel and SAF conversion at the Great Falls Refinery. He also providing support for ESG and GHG reporting.
  • Barry Curtis (1981) spent five months living in Germany in 2022 with his wife as part of her Humboldt Fellowship after concluding his role within the US Davis Office of Research in 2021. He later started a new role within the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. He sources the equivalent of "Capstone" projects for 2nd year MBAs. This role interacts directly with industry and scopes real-world, real-time projects that have 4-6 MBA students address issues/opportunities the project Sponsor lacks the staffing to address internally. These projects deliver excellent value to company sponsors and provide MBA students opportunities to build skills critical for post-graduate success.
  • Kevin Hendryx (1981) retired in March 2022 from Chevron Phillips Chemical Company after 41 years of service. Kevin currently lives in Rocky River, OH.
  • William Quillen (1981) retired from Eli Lilly.
  • J Philip (Phil) Rohrer (1981) retired in February 2022 after a 41-year career at Exxon Company, USA and Afton Chemical (formerly known as Ethyl Petroleum Additives).
  • John Gustafson (1982) retired after nearly 40 years and now works part-time as a consultant at Gustafson Consulting LLC.
  • Kurt Rickard (1982) served as an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University until his retirement in May 2023.
  • Lester (Les) Smith (1982) is re-retiring in May 2024.
  • Lori McPherson (1982) retired in 2022.
  • Kristen Woody Dockter (1983) opened Studio KDRx Pilates in March 2018 and will be celebrating the studio's 6th anniversary in March.
  • Michael Gzybowski (1983) started his career as a patent examiner at the age of 71.
  • Holly Little (1983) is gainfully retired.
  • Patrick Mosher (1983) retired from Accenture after 28.5 years and recently launched Wisdom 4 Humanity, focusing on philanthropy. Additionally, he serves as Interim Chief of Staff to Dean Bullard.
  • Linda Smith (Atwood) (1983) retired in December 2019 after 36.5 years with the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Operations.
  • Donald King (1984) has been a General Surgeon since 1993, practicing on the Southside of Indianapolis.
  • Jeff Lievense (1984) remains active in retirement, doing consulting and professional volunteer work. He received the 2022 Alumni Merit Award from the University of Michigan's Department of Chemical Engineering, and in 2023, he was named to Biofuels Digest's Bioeconomy 500 (outstanding leaders of the bioeconomy's development and deployment). Most significantly, he and his wife Lisa welcomed their first grandchild, born June 4, 2024.
  • Roger Fowee (1985) retired from NALCO Water in 2022.
  • Maria (Rumbaugh) Gross (1985) returned to teach high school math at Maritime HS after spending 10 years in higher education.
  • Raj Melkote (1985) joined BayoTech Hydrogen, LLC to lead the R&D/Engineering team.
  • Marty Barbarich (1986) retired as of December 31, 2018.
  • Cassandra Moses (1987) retired from Abbott after 33 years of service in June 2023.
  • Marc Hochman (1988) was recently named Global Chief Operating Officer of Kearney Digital & Analytics.

 

1990s

  • Jorge Olivares (1990) announced his retirement from Eli Lilly and Company after 34 years of service.
  • Timothy Lebrecht (1991) accepted an expansion of responsibilities to include the transition to hydrogen for clean energy processes.
  • Manish Badani (1992) is retired and serves as a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Chemical Technology.
  • Shawn Batey (1992) started a new position at Sigma Engineers and Constructors in Baton Rouge in April 2021.
  • Eric Brooks (1992) completed an HVAC and process chiller design and installation project to support new product expansion at a major food processor.
  • Patrick Welborn (1992)retired at the end of December 2021 after 31 years at Dow Corning / Dow.
  • Jeff Kerkay (1993): Jeff Kerkay was named Vice President - Investments, Treasury, and Real Estate for Henry Ford Health in Detroit, MI in June 2023.
  • Loy-Sek Tay (1993) focuses on Climate Neutral and Net Positive Nature Sustainability.
  • Scott Shelton (1994) took on a new role as COO of Renovation Systems, serving the Multifamily market.
  • William Martin (1995) has been assigned as the Assistant Director at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, WI.
  • Jeanne Banks (1996 was promoted to a Lead Chemical Engineer position with Honeywell UOP in October 2023.
  • Damian Costa (1996) twin daughters both began their freshman year at Purdue starting Fall 2023.
  • Sigfrido Hernandez II (1996) was promoted to Business Development Manager at Air Products, responsible for on-site industrial gas generation plants business in Latin America.

2000s

  • Nick Adler (2000) assumed the role of Vice President of Value Streams for Wabash, responsible for a $2.5B+ operating plan and increasing value for customers throughout all Wabash business segments.
  • Valerie Ghai (2000) works as a cleaning validation engineer at Thermofisher Scientific, focusing on pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Alvaro Timotheo (2000) transitioned to the role of Chief Commercial Officer for CPM, overseeing the company's commercial team in four key segments globally.
  • Nicole Ayers (2002) coaches VEX Robotics and Esports at Martha and Josh Morriss Mathematics and Engineering Elementary School.
  • Jonathan Gortat (2002) started a new position as Director of Licensing and Strategic Alliances for Stanford University in April 2023.
  • Angela Kofoed (2002) was promoted to PPM in July 2022 with a focus on quality and optimization in a newly expanding business line.
  • Susan Gleissner (2003) launched Unearth Coaching & Consulting in 2021, alongside her current career with Hennepin County in Minneapolis.
  • Jacob Coleman (2004) was promoted to an expert in the Hydroprocessing technical area for Chevron.
  • Colleen Lerner (2004) assumed a new position at a chemical manufacturing site and is open to supporting current and past classmates.
  • Joseph Franses (2005) took a job as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, Section of Hematology-Oncology, focusing on liver cancer research.
  • Josh Fulk (2005) was promoted to Vice President of Brewing Operations for BJ's Restaurants in 2023.
  • Jimmy Cui (2006) started a new job at Axon since May 2023.
  • Ajay Joshi (2007) is a senior executive at bp, serving as Vice President of bp aviation business across North and South America.
  • Vikram Pansare (2008) was promoted to Director of Molecular Diagnostics at Ultragenyx.
  • Pradeep Suresh (2008) was promoted to partnership at Oliver Wyman in 2021.
  • Daniel Jemison (2009) started a new company/job since January 2022.

 

2010s

  • Robbie Cunningham (2010) assumed a new position as a Senior Process Development Engineer, leaving his previous Senior Process Engineer position.
  • Matt Foust (2010) led a procurement project for Shell, resulting in the award of three contracts totaling $125M/year in total spend for their Deepwater Gulf of Mexico portfolio.
  • Lauren Quig (2010) teaches environmental organic chemistry as an adjunct at Portland State and works on a high-resolution site characterization remedial investigation of PFAS at a large air force base.
  • Joe Williams (2012) has been promoted to Plant Manager at Glanbia Nutritionals, following previous roles as Operations Manager and Engineering Manager.
  • Tyler Boisseau (2013) serves as Production Manager in Seattle, WA, for CRH, a company specializing in building materials manufacturing. He oversees the cement manufacturing sector, leading the production department with 50 employees. Noteworthy projects include developing the Seattle plant to achieve net zero facility status by using alternative raw materials and fuels.
  • Paul Brooks (2013) has taken on a new position as a Sr. Process Engineer in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. His projects include overseeing processes for new market APIs and serving as the lead engineer on an incoming commercial product capital project.
  • Rebekah Hanewinkel (2013) supported the process controls and start-up of proprietary FCDh technology from 2020 to 2024 with Dow, a pioneering project in on-purpose propylene production. She found the project highly rewarding and looks forward to further sustainable innovations.
  • Taylar Sykes (Marshall) (2013) started a new role in May 2022 in Glendale, AZ, for Nestle. She is involved in building a new greenfield Beverage factory to produce Coffee mate, Starbucks, and Natural Bliss coffee enhancer products, set to open in July 2024.
  • Ani Kelkar (2014) has been elected as a Partner at McKinsey & Company, based in Greater Boston.
  • Junchen Liu (2014) graduated from NC State University with a ChE PhD.
  • Christopher Schweitzer (2014)was promoted to Manager, Supplier Risk at AbbVie in September 2021. He also began a part-time MBA program at The University of Chicago Booth School of Business in June 2023.
  • Anya Hobson (2015) is now a mother to a 2-year-old and 6-month-old twins.
  • Mattia Peters (2016) was promoted to Business Team Lead at Flint Hills Resources, a Koch company.
  • Zachary Rinaldi (2016) joined The Christopher Stephen Corporation as the Technical Sales Manager after five and a half years at 3M, specializing in custom machine building and automation.
  • Kelly Wang (2016) successfully defended her PhD and will start a new job as a Data Scientist in California.
  • Charles Beaver (2017) was promoted to Production Manager. He successfully completed a six-sigma project that significantly reduced fresh water usage in a filtration process.
  • Crystal Fisher (2017) will be moving to France at the end of February 2024 for a short-term swap assignment with L'Oreal's luxury fragrance team.
  • Kate Reis (2017) graduated from Northwestern's full-time MMM program in June 2023 with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and MS Design Innovation from the Segal Design Institute. She has since returned to Deloitte Consulting, focusing on digital product and innovation strategy practice.

  • Will Baud (2018) has achieved several accomplishments, including being featured in AIChE's "Meet the Process Engineers" series and Endress+Hauser USA People Stories. He also played a key role in launching new lab equipment at the Continuous Process Lab for the grand opening of Dudley Hall. Additionally, he helped host a multi-month case competition for Purdue students sponsored by Endress+Hauser and started serving as a mentor for a Purdue Polytechnic Institute Capstone Project team.
  • Haley Vapnik (2018) received her PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2023.
  • Claire Liu (2019) joined Johnson and Johnson in April 2022. She also got married to a fellow boilermaker in 2023.
  • Scott McClary (2019) accepted a position as a Systems Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, after completing his postdoctoral research position at the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR).
  • Siddharth Ravichandran (2019) began his PhD studies in December 2021.
  • Anne Roach (2019) transitioned from working on the production floor as a supervisor and process engineer to managing projects worth millions of dollars aimed at redesigning and transforming production processes for her company within her first five years after graduation. 
  • Samantha Siu (2019) led the launch of IT Cosmetics Cleansing Balm and Garnier Delicate Peel Micellar Water. She was also promoted to Senior Product Developer in 2022.
  • Frederick Wilson II (2019) took on a new role as an R&T Process Engineer at ASR Group.

 

2020s

  • Evan Jones (2020) has been working on the "Rodeo Renewed" project at the Phillips 66 Rodeo Refinery, which aims to convert an oil refinery into a renewable diesel/jet production facility.
  • Zachary Piontek (2020) took a new job with Celanese in 2022 and led the installation of a new organic fluid vaporizer project in 2023.
  • Austin Taskey (2020) changed jobs to Venture Global LNG in October 2023, where he is currently working on the pipeline into the Plaquemines LNG facility.
  • Christina Core (2021) was promoted from Engineer I to Engineer II and became President of the National Society of Black Engineers Twin Cities Professionals Chapter (NSBE TCPC).
  • Brianne Kelly (2021) tried her hand at Product Owning and led analytics on multiple projects.
  • Paige Probus (2021) completed Kennametal's two-year rotational leadership program and accepted a full-time position in the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering group as a Smart Factory Engineer.
  • Andrew Reader (2021) was hired at Evonik Tippecanoe Laboratories in August 2022, where he supports the production of large-scale intermediate and API drug molecules.
  • Nicholas Sierzputowski (2021) received a recent promotion from Process Engineer to Sr. Process Engineer at Heartland Food Products Group, where he serves as the subject matter expert for the aseptic lines.
  • Bach Vu (2021) has new assignments.
  • Blake Selm (2022) has been assisting Eli Lilly in designing their facility for a new Type 2 Diabetes drug. He also trained and competed in the Worlds Half Ironman in Finland in 2023 and plans to race again in New Zealand in 2024.
  • Aman Bhargava (2023) started his PhD at the Physics of Fluids group, University of Twente, in January 2024.
  • Jacob Birkofer (2023) traveled to Baytown, TX, to supervise an H2 Pressure Swing Adsorber, focusing on Adsorbent Loading.
  • David Dean (2023) started a job as a research scientist with Shell Catalysts & Technologies.
  • Debajyoti Debnath (2023)started a new position as a machine learning engineer at Siemens.
  • Kendra Lin (2021) joined a rotational program for LDC, working in their Indiana, Canada, and Iowa plant locations. In April 2023, she relocated to Birmingham, AL, to join the J.M. Smucker Company as they start up a new Uncrustables plant.
  • Naseeha Mohammed (2023) began her PhD in chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She is co-advised by Professor Kathryn Whitehead and Professor Jim Schneider, working on creating lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery systems.
