What does civil engineering look like?

This is the question posed in Spring 2007 to the students—mostly sophomores—of the civil engineering undergraduate seminar course taught by Professor Marika Santagata.

The assignment led to the design of 14 posters by teams formed by 3-4 students, which were judged by a panel of students , staff and faculty. Two awards were given: Best Artistic Rendition and Best Concept.

The award for Best Artistic Rendition went to Colby Baker, Amanda Cody, Katie Hartman and Mallory Schaus for the poster entitled "Building Bridges to Tomorrow." The poster contrasts the tools used to "unveil the curtain to their cranial masterpieces" by today's civil engineers and tomorrow's engineers equipped with "Etch-a-Sketches, and a fertile mind asking the question 'How can I make this happen?' "

The award for Best Concept went to the poster entitled "Envisioning That Which Has Never Been," created by Cole Pavlina, Kyle Iton and Katelyn Zollos. The poster, inspired by a quote by Albert Einstein, references the three areas of interest – land development, structures and environmental engineering – of the three students.
