CE graduate student Joshua Harmon has received the National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship.

The National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship is a competitive fellowship awarded to students pursuing doctoral degrees in science and engineering disciplines. The NDSEG program was created in 1989 by Congress to increase the number and quality of the nation's scientists and engineers. To date, over 4,000 NDSEG fellowships have been awarded from more than 60,000 applicants. The NDSEG is funded by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office, and the Office of Naval Research and is directed by the Director of Defense Research and Engineering. The fellowship provides three years of funding for full tuition and fees, a monthly stipend, a travel budget, and health insurance.

Josh is a first year graduate student studying structural engineering in the civil engineering school at Purdue. He graduated from Purdue with a Bachelor's Degree with Highest Distinction in civil engineering in May 2019. As an undergraduate, he did research with graduate students at the Bowen Lab. Josh has worked as a structural engineer designing steel frame buildings at Complete Structural Consulting in Indianapolis, IN and Dunaway in Fort Worth, TX.  He is currently working on his Ph.D, doing research with Dr. Amit Varma on the behavior and design of Composite Plate Shear Walls. His career goals are to work in industry on performance-based design or forensic investigations.
