HVAC software team wins Schurz Innovation Challenge at Purdue

Grissom Controls, which offers a software solution to optimize controls for highly complex heating, cooling and ventilation systems in buildings, took top honors and $5,000 at the fifth Schurz Innovation Challenge at Purdue on Thursday (April 30). Andrew Martin, the sole member of Grissom Controls, is a student in Purdue's Lyles School of Civil Engineering.

Congratulations to the Purdue Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Traffic Bowl Team on winning the Great Lakes District competition! This annual competition among ITE student chapter teams uses transportation planning and engineering topics for the clues, questions and answers.

Storm Drain Patching Method Poses Environmental Risks

More than 1 million storm-water culverts that drain U.S. roadways are in need of repair. State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) have turned to cured-in-place pipe, or CIPP, as a fast and low-cost way to rehabilitate the aging systems. Professor Andrew Whelton and his team were recruited to take a closer look at CIPP's environmental effects.

Civil Engineering PhD student Maryam Parsa has been awarded the esteemed Intel Foundation/ Semiconductor Research Corporation Education Alliance (SRCEA) Graduate Fellowship. This Graduate Fellowship Program was created in 1986 to attract exceptionally talented students to academic areas of interest to SRC members.

S-BRITE Receives Steel Truss Bridge

Here is a quick look at the anticipated delivery of a 1937 truss bridge originating from Michigan. The trusses will be setup later this spring for use at Purdue University's Steel Bridge Research, Inspection, Training, and Engineering Center (S-BRITE) located outside of campus. The S-BRITE Center is under the direction of Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Robert Connor.

Engineers investigate possible lingering impacts from Elk River chemical spill

In January 2014, thousands of gallons of chemicals spilled into West Virginia's Elk River, near Charleston. With support from a National Science Foundation (NSF) rapid response research grant (RAPID), environmental engineer Andrew Whelton led a research team that went door-to-door taking water samples within days of the spill.

Civil Engineering Master's student Jessica Holberg (advised by Dr. Venkatesh Merwade) was named a recipient of the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellowship for the 2015 award year. This award provides a yearly stipend and the cost of tuition for a period of three years.
