Electrifying times in transportation

In the United States, the transportation sector accounts for 28% of energy consumption, 70% of petroleum use and 29% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It is argued that as much as an 80% reduction in worldwide emissions may be needed to stabilize the atmospheric concentration of GHG over the next three decades — at the same time that our nation’s infrastructure is aging, and in need of trillions of dollars in repairs and reconstruction.

NSF EAGER grant to reexamine hazard mitigation during COVID-19 pandemic

With many people stuck inside for months on end, the built environment has played a significant role in the COVID-19 pandemic. With support from a new National Science Foundation EAGER grant, a team of engineers including Karl H. Kettelhut Professor in Civil Engineering and NHERI-NCO Center Director Julio Ramirez will study the ways in which that built environment mitigates or exacerbates the pandemic.

Eirini Christoforidou receives Geosynthetic Institute fellowship

PhD student Eirini Christoforidou has been awarded a Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) fellowship for the academic year 2020-2021 for her research proposal "Improved understanding of load- and displacement-transfer mechanisms between geocell and fill in flexible pavements."

New Purdue lab provides tiny home for sustainability education

At just 192 square feet, Purdue University's newest civil engineering laboratory is remarkably small for a research space. Yet, Purdue professor Nusrat Jung has big plans for it. The laboratory comes in the form of a tiny house, called zEDGE, that Jung and a team of students designed and engineered for testing the energy efficiency of large structures on a small scale. Built on a trailer for easy mobility, zEDGE (pronounced "zee-edge") is stationed outside Hampton Hall on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.

Lyles School of Civil Engineering undergraduate program ranked #3 in the nation

U.S. News & World Report has released its national rankings of undergraduate programs for 2021 with Purdue Civil Engineering ranked #3 in the nation. The rankings are computed from the responses to a survey sent to deans, heads, and selected senior faculty. Purdue Civil Engineering has been consistently ranked as a top 10 undergraduate program by U.S. News & World Report for over a decade.

Purdue research team awarded $2 million in NSF funding for multi-university 3D concrete printing collaboration

A team of Purdue faculty including Jan Olek, James H. and Carol H. Cure Professor in Civil Engineering and Director of the North Central Superpave Center (NCSC); Chris Williams, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering; Pablo Zavattieri, Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in Civil Engineering; and Jeff Youngblood, Professor of Materials Engineering, is among the multi-university group of researchers led by Arizona State who received a 5-year, $2 million grant from the NSF for development of a 3D Concrete Printing Network (3DConnect) for accelerating progress in additive manufacturing of concrete.

Milo Riverso elected chairman of design professionals coalition

Milo E. Riverso (MSCE 1982, Ph.D. 1984), Ph.D., P.E., CCM, president and chief executive officer of STV, has been named chairman of the Design Professionals Coalition (DPC), a national organization consisting of senior executives from the leading design and engineering firms across the United States. Riverso's three-year term was effective beginning in August.

SBIR grant fast-tracks 3D-printed runway mat development

A $1 million SBIR Phase II grant from the U.S. Air Force will help fast-track the development of a new innovative runway mat. Pablo Zavattieri, the Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in civil engineering at Purdue University, is working with Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies (ITAMCO) to develop the new runway mat. The team uses metal 3D printing methods for its technology.

Sogand Hasanzadeh receives ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award

Sogand Hasanzadeh, assistant professor in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Division of Construction Engineering and Management, has received the Thomas Glavinich ELECTRI International 2020 Early Career Award. The six-month Early Career Award study, Examining a Latent Side-Effect of Electrical Safety Interventions among T&D Line Workers, will utilize an immersive mixed-reality combined with wearable sensors to empirically examine the risk perception and risk-taking behavior of T&D line workers as a function of the number and type of fall and electrical safety interventions in place for their protection.

CE offers affordable online master’s degree via edX

Purdue Engineering is offering a new online master’s degree in its civil engineering master’s program - through edX. The online master's will start in January 2021 with the same faculty and courses as the on-campus master's program, ranked 6th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.
