First built in the 1960s, the tow tank in the basement of Hampton Hall will be renovated by the end of 2016. According to Cary Troy, associate professor of civil engineering, the facility, owned by civil engineering's hydraulic and hydrologic engineering department, was built along with the building itself. It is designed to tow objects through a tank of water using a carriage at the top, which would allow researchers to measure, for example, the drag force from the fluid to the object.

CE grad student Jessica Eisma has been offered a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant for the 2016-17 academic year. She will travel to Tanzania to research on the ecological impact of an ancient water capture and storage technology that is recognized as efficient for Tanzanian ecosystems: sand dams.

Purdue's third annual Day of Giving lived up to its "Bigger and Better" theme, raising a record $18.3 million from 12,872 donations in 24 hours - and claiming, for the second year running, the record for most dollars raised for higher education through a single-day campaign. This year, the Lyles School of Civil Engineering raised a total of $278,602 from 272 individual gifts.

Dr. Nadia Gkritza was chosen as the first-ever recipient of the CE Outstanding Mentor of Engineering Graduate Students award, an annual award sponsored by the College of Engineering. The goal of the award is to recognize an outstanding faculty member in each school and to share their best practices with young faculty members.

On Wednesday, April 13th, the Lyles School of Civil Engineering hosted the German America Chamber of Commerce for a seminar on the innovation of energy efficiency in transportation systems. Nader Naderpajouh, Visiting Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management, has been recognized as an outstanding reviewer by the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering. He was selected based on his diligent reviews and constructive comments throughout 2015 to ensure the integrity of the research that is published in the areas associated with the contemporary issues on management and leadership in engineering.

Purdue University's Lyles School of Civil Engineering recognized six passionate, influential and visionary graduates during the 23rd annual Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Awards banquet on April 14, 2016.

Lisa Lorena Losada Rojas, an undergraduate student from Colombia who was hosted here at Purdue last year through the Purdue-Colombia Institute, has been recognized for having the best thesis in her field at the National University of Colombia.

Nadia Gkritza, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Agricultural and Biological Engineering, was presented with the Jane F. Garvey/UMass ITE Transportation Leadership Award for her demonstrated leadership and outstanding skill in the field of transportation.

The first Bernard F. Langan Scholarship at Purdue University was awarded to Ayda Catalina Galvis, a graduate student pursuing her Ph.D. in civil engineering at Purdue University. Her thesis is titled "Effect of Cyclic Loads on the Axial Capacity of Piles." She obtained her B.S. and M.S in civil engineering from the National University of Colombia.

Hamed Zamenian, doctoral student in Civil Engineering, was awarded the Argent Memorial Scholarship from North America Society of Trenchless Technology (NASTT) in Dallas, TX on March 28, 2016. Hamed works with Professor Dulcy Abraham and is pursuing doctoral research related to the socioeconomic assessment of water main breaks in water supply and distribution systems.

Daniel Castaneda, a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, presented his seminar on March 31. His research seeks to understand the consequence of design, handling, and placement of fresh concrete and cementitious materials as they relate to the long-term durability of civil infrastructure.

Chris Williams, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, participated in the 2016 ASCE ExCEEd Teaching Workshop at Florida Gulf Coast University on June 19-24, 2016. He presented three classes during the workshop.

Ali Hekmatfar, Ayesha Shah, Rebecca McDaniel, Gerald Huber and John E. Haddock received the 2016 Emmons Award for best paper presented, while Leila Sadeghi received the best student poster award at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists.

Fangning He, a PhD Candidate in the Lyles School of Civil Engineering, has been named as recipient of the 2016 Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship Award.

CE sophomore Harshit Kapoor and his team were awarded a third-place prize of $1500 for their soy-based detergent pods in the 2015-16 Purdue Student Soybean Product Innovation Competition.
