Hail!

Greg (ABE 2007) and Summer Long welcomed their daughter Emily Marie on April 1, 2015. She arrived at 7 lbs, 10 oz, and 21" long and we have it on good authority that she doesn't just look like her daddy, she acts like him too. Congratulations!

Farewell

Dr. Ira "Joe" Ross

ABE Alumnus (MS 1957, PhD 1960) Ira "Joe" Ross passed away on August 22, 2015. He retired as the Department Chairman of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Kentucky in 1994. 

September ABE-Note

Indiana AgrAbility was very active at the 2015 Indiana State Fair with three exhibits.  The primary exhibit was in the FFA Pavilion courtesy of Indiana FFA.  The display included Bridging Horizons Community Service contest information, a mobile Life Essentials lift, AgrAbility popup banners, Arthritis and Agriculture publications, Back on the Farm publications, Vocational Rehabilitation Services brochures, Tool Box product examples, News Notes, and AgrAbility Harvest. 

A second Indiana AgrAbility display was in the Purdue Extension / Horticulture Building.  This display was included in the Purdue Extension displays where Purdue Extension Educators and specialists were available to answer questions concerning multiple programs.  Indiana AgrAbility was included in the scavenger hunt conducted within the display area every year.

The third display was included in the Indiana Young Farmer building supplementing the grain bin safety display.  The display included an AgrAbility popup banner, a farm fatality map, and grain bin posters and engulfment examples.

As a partner in the Purdue Extension New/Beginning Farmer grant, Indiana AgrAbility hosted a veteran farm tour at Blue Yonder Organic Farm.  The event was moderated by Cindy Chastain, Indiana AgrAbility and National AgrAbility Veteran Outreach Coordinator.  The event included a brunch, presentations by the Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Farm Credit.  It was highlighted by Sara Creech, a military veteran, giving her story to 39 veterans and their families followed by a tour of her farm, Blue Yonder Organic Farm. 

Indiana AgrAbility was represented at the Battlemind to Home VI Symposium by Cindy Chastain, Veteran Outreach Coordinator, and Steve Swain, Rural Rehabilitation Specialist.  The symposium is an opportunity for professionals who work with military veterans to obtain additional training in those areas of interest.  It also presented a time when organizations who work with veterans were able to have an exhibit and answer questions from attendees about their organization and the services they provide to veterans.  Attendees included Vocational Rehabilitation Service counselors and supervisors, rehabilitation hospital professionals, veteran administration counselors, other government representatives, and military veterans.

Maha Visitors:

On August 8^th, the Maha Fluid Power Research Center received visitors from Linkoeping University, located in Sweden. The visitors were treated to a tour of the facility given by its director, Dr. Ivantysynova, as well as a demonstration of some of the equipment that embodies the cutting-edge research conducted at the Center. The visit, enjoyed by all, stands testament to the high-quality research conducted at the Maha that draws people from all over the world to its doors.

New Faces at Maha:

The Maha Fluid Power Research Center would like to welcome Andrew Robinson and Rituraj (two new Ph.D. students), Srinath Tankasala and Yash Shah (two new master’s students), as well as Wencheng Guo, Fabio Linzitto and Cristina Perez Garcia (three visiting scholars). All are joining Dr. Vacca’s research group, and will be working towards new discoveries related to gerotors and external gear machines in topics spanning from the use of non-Newtonian fluids to improving gerotor gear profile design. Furthermore, Maha would like to welcome a new Ph.D. student to Dr. Ivantysynova’s research group. Hyukjoon Kwon will study heat transfer in the hydraulic hybrid vehicle developed at Maha.

MESA is seeking donations to assist in our violence prevention outreach efforts with Migrant Farm Worker families.  Migrant farm workers are among the poorest families in the United States. These workers and their families travel each year to Indiana to help plant and harvest crops to bring food to our tables.  Many of these families arrive with no money and only one change of clothes.   

While we are always excited to receive items that are new, we also accept gently used items that are in clean, working condition.  Due to space limitations with our move to AGAD, we are not able to accept drop-off donations of furniture.  However if you contact us directly, we can make arrangements to pick up larger items needed by families.  We cannot accept donations that are in need of repair.

• Household items: small appliances, dishes, sheets, bedding
• Hygiene products: shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, lotion, toothpaste
• Babies:  clothes, diapers, equipment, toys

The purpose of this competition is to encourage students to exercise their knowledge and skills in creating new industrial products from soybeans.  Student teams will enter this competition to create novel products or materials using soybeans, or their components. 

Student innovation contests are excellent learning tools.  Through these competitions, students will gain practical experience in utilizing their coursework education to develop products/processes, learning about specific new technical areas, and applying economic, technical and marketing feasibility.  Industry gains novel ideas for potential commercial development, as well as developing future potential employees.
