Shih, who served as AAE’s head from 2009-2019, was selected for the role by the AIAA Publications Committee from a “group of highly qualified candidates,” the AIAA said in a release. He will start as editor-in-chief in January 2021.

“Professor Shih has articulated an excellent vision for the future of the AIAA Journal,” chair of AIAA publications committee Robert Pitz said in the release. “He has outstanding scholarly credentials, extensive editorial experience, significant executive skills and strong connections to professional leaders in government, academia and industry.”

Shih has been an editorial board member and associate editor for a wide range of technical journals, including the AIAA Journal of Propulsion and Power (2001-07).

“I am extremely honored and humbled to be given this opportunity to serve,” Shih said. “Since its inception, the AIAA Journal has published over 24,000 peer-reviewed articles that have provided an intellectual foundation that played a major role in shaping the development of aerospace for nearly 60 years. I look forward to work with all of our stakeholders to continue the excellence and impact of the AIAA Journal in documenting and disseminating knowledge that will advance and shape aerospace, now and in the future.”

Shih’s diverse research interests include computational fluid dynamics, gas-turbine aerodynamics and heat transfer, and thermal management of aerospace systems. His past AIAA honors include the 2020 Thermophysics Award and the 2015 Energy Systems Award.

Currently, Shih chairs the AIAA Committee on Higher Education and is a member of the AIAA Committee on Standards for Computational Fluid Dynamics and the Ethics Committee.
