Each year, Vertical Flight Foundation (VFF) scholarships are awarded to college students demonstrating an interest in pursuing engineering-related careers in vertical flight technology, its website said.

Murphy received the Glidden S. Doman Scholarship ($2,800), named for one of the six original American helicopter pioneers.

“Purdue has provided so many opportunities to explore different aspects of aerospace engineering, including vertical flight,” Murphy said. “I'm excited for future developments in vertical flight and the career opportunities this scholarship can provide.”

The VFF, the philanthropic arm of the Vertical Flight Society, was established in 1967. Since 1977, the Foundation has awarded more than 500 scholarships.

Scholarship recipients will be honored at an awards banquet during the Vertical Flight Society’s 76th Annual Forum & Technology Display on Oct. 7 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
