Wenbin Yu, a professor in AAE, was honored May 7 as a University Faculty Scholar by the Office of the Provost.

The University Faculty Scholars Program recognizes outstanding faculty members at the West Lafayette campus who are on an accelerated path for academic distinction. Faculty must hold the rank of tenured associate or full professor and have been in that rank for no more than five years. Faculty Scholars are appointed for a non-renewable five-year term and receive an annual $10,000 discretionary allocation.

Yu’s expertise is in multiscale constitutive modeling with applications to composite and smart materials. He has developed seven computer codes that are being used by thousands in government labs, universities, research institutes, and companies. His research has been funded by both federal and private industry. He has introduced the concept of Structure Genome, which provides a unified approach for modeling of advanced materials and structures.

“I am extremely humbled to receive this honor of University Faculty Scholar, which would be impossible without the support from my family, colleagues, and students,” Yu says.

Yu, who joined Purdue in 2013, is director for the Composites Design and Manufacturing HUB. He’s associate director for the Composites Virtual Factory of the Composites Manufacturing and Simulation Center.

Yu is an ASME Fellow and AIAA Associate Fellow.
