Inseok Hwang, a professor in AAE, is the recipient of the 2019 C.T. Sun School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Excellence in Research Award.

The award is presented annually to an individual or team of faculty members in AAE to recognize high quality contributions in science and engineering. Hwang was honored during the Outstanding Aerospace Engineer banquet April 2.

Hwang has contributed significantly to the development of modeling, analysis, and control methodologies and theory for the Cyber-Physical Systems with applications to safety-critical aerospace systems: Air traffic control, unmanned aircraft systems, and space applications. His research has been supported by national agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, as well as by industry.

Hwang is an AIAA Associate Fellow, received the NSF Career Award, and also was selected as one of the nation’s brightest young engineers by the National Academy of Engineering.

“I am greatly honored to receive this prestigious award, especially since it is a recognition from my colleagues,” Hwang says. “My research achievements could not be done without support from the school, which provides an environment where I can focus on my research, colleagues — especially those in the Dynamics & Control group — who make me feel cared for and part of a family, and my students, who are always working hard and tremendously contributing to my research. Lastly, I’d like to thank all who inspired me to pursue my dreams like my family.”
