Jonathan Poggie, an associate professor in AAE, has been selected as the Elmer F. Bruhn Award winner.

The award is presented annually to an outstanding teacher in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Poggie was selected by the School’s undergraduate student body. The award is given for excellence in teaching and made possible by the interest and generosity of friends and alumni of the school.

Poggie, who joined Purdue in 2015, teaches one undergraduate course, AAE 334, “Aerodynamics.” The course covers almost all of an 1,100-page textbook in one semester, so Poggie likens it to an “engineering boot camp.”

“I am very pleased that our students have come out of the class with a favorable impression,” says Poggie, who won another teaching award in 2017, the W.A. Gustafuson Teaching Award, chosen by juniors and seniors. “The work can pay off — several students have told me that taking the class helped them get through a tough job interview. Many thanks to our undergraduates for this honor.”

Alina Alexeenko, a professor, and David Spencer, an associate professor, received the next-highest votes.

The winner of the Bruhn Award becomes the school’s nominee for the College of Engineering’s annual A.A. Potter Best Teacher Award.
