Crossley contributes to AIAA SciTech panel

William Crossley, a professor in AAE, participated in the "On-Demand Aviation: Challenges and Solutions" panel at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Science and Technology Forum and Exposition in early January.
Crossley, a professor at Purdue since 1995, was introduced as an expert who has done key studies looking at the transition from driving to flying in the urban mobility market and also a larger on-demand market for longer distances.
Alumnus Bill Fredericks (BSAAE ’06) was also on the panel. Fredericks is the CEO and founder of Advanced Aircraft Company. He formerly worked at NASA Langley Research Center as an aircraft designer, the two most notable of which are the NASA Greased Lightning and the conceptual design of the NASA X-57 Maxwell.
The panel discussed a safe, efficient, and accessible (on-demand) air transportation system around metropolitan areas for passengers and cargo. The general concept of operations in the scope of the discussion were trips of 10 to 100 miles, operating from a UAM Port infrastructure and/or existing heliports likely as part of a multi-modal transportation, up to nine passengers or 2,000 pounds of payload, a single pilot or autonomous, and enabling daily trips and/or cargo delivery.
