Students in AAE 450/EAPS 391: Senior Spacecraft Design presented their senior design project to Gemini and Apollo astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin on April 18, 2017. The class was taught by AAE Professor James Longuski and EAPS Assistant Professor David Minton.
Known as Project Destiny, the 2017 project evaluated the feasibility of Elon Musk's plan to colonize Mars with 1,000,000 people, in the time frame of 100 years, for only $200,000 a ticket. Students looked at factors including safety, practicality and cost. They concluded that while it is possible to colonize Mars, it is not possible to do it at the cost outlined in Musk’s plan.
