ASME Hosts Congressional Briefing on Developing a Robust AI and STEM Workforce

ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) was proud to join with IEEE and the U.S. Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus to bring industry leaders together on Capitol Hill to discuss America’s future workforce development needs in the growing AI and STEM fields.

The briefing explored justifications for government investment in AI tools for workforce development, including identifying institutional resources needed to advance U.S. competitiveness in AI-enabled technology applications across varying levels of education and how federal agencies are approaching the intersection of emerging technologies and workforce talent.

The discussion featured science and technology leaders at the intersection of research, education, technology, and workforce development policy, including moderator Dr. Jonathan Cagan, Professor and Head of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University; Diana Gehlhaus, Senior Advisor for Talent, Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office for the U.S. Department of Defense; Karthik Ramani, Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering at Purdue University; and Yelena Vaynberg, Government & Regulatory Affairs Executive at IBM.
