Description:

“Research and Development in IoT and Edge Processing in the world of Industry 4.0”

The Bechtel Innovation Design Center on Purdue’s campus is a student project facility which serves students across the whole of Purdue. To keep our students safe, and to understand the use of the center, develop and deploy an ever-evolving network of off-the-shelf and full custom IoT platforms employing machine learning and edge processing to monitor usage, verify and enforce safety and gather analytic data. The systems to be monitored are as diverse as CNC, composite manufacture and wood working. The main technologies used are Linux single-board computers (similar to Raspberry Pi), programmed in Python, reporting to a web system written in Python. The goals are publications on the use of these technologies to monitor the space, a measurable improvement in safety and environmental monitoring in a live facility used by approximately 1000 new students a year.
