Title: Research Projects That Shaped My PhD Journey
Abstract: I will be talking about the three projects I was involved in during my PhD. The majority of my slides will focus on the first project, which is my dissertation work, and I will also briefly describe the other two projects. The first project is about high-frequency bone conduction (BC) testing. In the first aim, I evaluated the validity of BC thresholds at 4, 6, and 8 kHz using a BHM BC-1 transducer that, based on its specifications, appears suitable for high-frequency BC testing. In the second aim, I compared BC thresholds and air-bone gaps obtained with both the BHM BC-1 and a RadioEar B71 bone transducer to determine whether transducer limitations play a significant role in false air-bone gaps at high frequencies. The second project examined whether standard-frequency correlates of extended high-frequency hearing loss could be responsible for impaired speech-in-noise performance, and the third project evaluated how different signal processing algorithms for extracting speech from background noise affect intelligibility, naturalness, and listening effort.
