Title: Perceptual Masking and Cochlear Suppression Measured using Frequency Sweeps.
Abstract: The auditory system's sensitivity to rapid frequency changes is crucial for speech and music perception. Human behavioral studies using frequency-modulated maskers have shown that the direction of modulation—either increasing or decreasing in frequency with time—significantly affects masked thresholds of a tonal signal. While this effect has traditionally been attributed to cochlear dispersion, recent animal studies suggest that nonlinear cochlear suppression may also be a key factor. To explore this, a combination of behavioral and otoacoustic measures was used to examine the roles of dispersion and suppression in normal-hearing humans.
