2016 School of Nuclear Engineering Awards

School of Nuclear Engineering faculty, staff, and students continued to be recognized for their many achievements. Congratulations on another outstanding year!

Faculty Awards

Professor Martín López de Bertodano co-authored a textbook, Two-Fluid Model Stability, Simulation and Chaos, with co-authors: NE graduate William Fullmer, research assistant, University of Colorado, Boulder; Professor Alejandro Clausse, Universidad Nacional del Centro, Argentina; and Professor Emeritus and former Department Head Victor H. Ransom, published by Springer International Publishing, 2017.

Professor Chan Choi received the 2016 Outstanding Engineering Graduate Student Mentor Award.

Assistant Professor Allen Garner was granted a patent, "Methods and Compositions for Destructive Interference," US Patent 9,356,357 (issued 31 May 2016).

Assistant Professor Allen Garner received the 2016 NPSS Early Achievement Award “for contributions to theoretical and experimental studies of the biological effects of electric pulses and plasmas and to nuclear training, education, and maintenance.” This award recognizes outstanding achievements to any of the fields of nuclear and plasma sciences within the first ten years of an individual’s career.

Professor Takashi Hibiki was honored for his years of service to Purdue University on Friday, November 4 during the Faculty Service Recognition Luncheon, hosted by the Office of the Provost.

Professor Shripad Revankar was granted a patent, "Ceramic-ceramic composites and process therefor[sic], nuclear fuels formed thereby, and nuclear reactor systems and processes operated therewith," US Patent 9466398B2 (issued 11 October 2016).

Professor Won Sik Yang and Associate Professor Hany Abdel-Khalik received Nuclear Engineering University Program (NEUP), U.S. Department of Energy grants for the following research:

  • As PI, Dr. Yang received funding for the project: Development of Transient Capabilities for the NEAMS Neutronics Code PROTEUS.
  • As Co-PI, Dr. Abdel-Khalik received funding for FY 2016 Integrated Research Projects Award: Development and Application of a Data Driven Methodology for Validation of Risk-Informed Safety Margin Characterization Models, with PI: Nam Dinh - North Carolina State University; Co-PI: Abhinav Gupta – North Carolina State University; Co-PI: Xiaodong Sun – Ohio State University.

Staff Awards

Academic Program Administrator Tiffany Stergar was selected as one of three finalists for the 2016 New Employee award as part of the College of Engineering Staff Awards of Excellence. The Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate Engineering staff who have excelled in their commitment to the College. Stergar was recognized at an event on December 2, 2016.

Student Awards

Stylianos Chatzidakis was selected as one of the best student papers at the 2016 ICAPP conference

Alex Hagen received the 2016 CoE Outstanding Service Scholarship

Amanda Loveless received the 2016-2017 Otto F. and Jenny H. Krauss Scholarship

Amanda Loveless received First Place for the Best Student paper for her presentation entitled "Generalization of Scaling Laws for Gas Breakdown to Account for Pressure" at the 2016 ICOPS Awards. Amanda also gave an invited oral presentation entitled "Matched Asymptotic Analysis of Atmospheric Pressure Gas Breakdown from Nanoscale to Microscale"

Amanda Loveless received First Place in the Best Student paper award competition for her talk, entitled "Predicting breakdown voltage for microscale and annoscale gaps as a function of pressure at the 2016 Electrostatics Joint Conference

Cailyn Ludwig received the 2016-2017 Blattner Scholarship

Victoria Noe-Kim and Trevor Kyle received the 2015-2016 Outstanding Senior Award

Corey Ohneck received the 2016-2016 George W. and Mabel E. Anderson Nuclear Engineering Scholarship

Anand Vadlamani received second place in the Best Student Paper award competition for his poster entitled "Biological cell dielectric property variation with temperature at the 2016 Electrostatics Joint Conference

Matthew Vinyard and Mitchell Hemesath received the 2016-2017 Thomas A. Plein Scholarship

Jeff Webster received the 2016 CoE Outstanding Student Research Award
