Dr. Allen Garner and researchers Amanda M. Loveless, Adam M. Darr & Haoxuan Wang, recently published a chapter in the book, Pulsed Discharge Plasmas- Characteristics and Applications.

The chapter is titled,"Gas Discharge and Electron Emission for Microscale and Smaller Gaps." It describes the development of “nexus theory,” which uses the asymptotic equations defining electron emission mechanisms to determine the conditions when the classical equations defining individual mechanisms or phenomena (e.g., thermionic emission, field emission, space-charge limited current in vacuum, or space-charge limited current with collisions) may be used or more complicated theories coupling multiple mechanisms are required.
