Nuclear Engineering students support Boy Scout activities on campus

Purdue School of Nuclear Engineering students led activities at the recent University of Scouting event held on the West Lafayette campus on November 12. The event provided Boy Scouts from the Sagamore Council the opportunity to earn a variety of badges through hands-on activities directed by Purdue students.

Nuclear Engineering students supported both the Nuclear Science merit badge and Engineering merit badge. Thirty-two Boy Scouts earned the Nuclear Science merit badge with the assistance of undergraduate students Robby Kile, Jack Weaver, and Andrew O’Connor (pictured right); graduate student Russell Brayfield; and Professor Robert Bean. The Scouts learned about radiation, assembled cloud chambers, learned to use GM Survey Meters, and discussed radiation safety.

Thirty-three Scouts earned the Engineering merit badge, learning about the design process, significant achievements in the field of engineering, and the work of different types of engineers.
