PurdueTHINK serves campus organizations

An IE student-founded and student-led consulting group had a busy fall semester - and continues to grow in numbers and scope.

"We started the semester with a huge recruiting push to ensure we can provide our clients with the highest caliber student leaders on campus," said Patrick Stuff,  a junior and director of marketing for PurdueTHINK. "We had five big projects last semester."

Founded by two IE undergraduates who have since graduated, Neale Moore and Sharanya Madhavan, PurdueTHINK student consultants focus on building innovative solutions for Purdue student clubs and administrative groups. PurdueTHINK has grown during the Fall 2018 semester to 30 members, after starting in August 2016 with 8 members.

"PurdueTHINK is an internal consulting group that helps other groups and organizations around campus, says Morgan Kuryla, IE academic advisor . "Students learn how to collaborate effectively in teams, apply coursework to a real-world setting, and use problem-solving techniques to implement sustainable improvements."

During the Fall 2018 semester, PurdueTHINK projects included:

  • The School of Industrial Engineering - Determining which skills are valuable for students and companies in the recruitment process, and using this information to improve the curriculum at Purdue to better prepare students for life after graduation.
  • Purdue Memorial Union - Looking at state-of-the-art unions across the country to see how we can potentially adapt the Purdue Union to provide more value to students and to better utilize the space.
  • Purdue Engineering Presidents Council (PEPC) - Analyzing the organizational structure of the organizations in PEPC to determine Best Practices on how to run an engineering organization, developing a Best Practices Handbook to be used as a resource by all on-campus engineering organizations to improve sustainability and to run more smoothly.
  • Krannert Hub - Developing a firm strategy for the club, revolving around long-term sustainability, impact on campus and membership benefits; and helping KHUB's efforts to aid Krannert and Purdue students.
  • Purdue Student Government - Clarifying and refocusing the mission statement of PSG's Sustainability Committee, restructuring their internal organization and creating a set of general organizational templates for members.

The organization also co-hosted a new event called the "Case Clash", where three IE student organizations came together to do a Case Competition and competed for a $1000 prize. The other two organizations, Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE) and Purdue Solutions, along with PurdueTHINK, competed in analyzing a fictitious home goods retailer's current position and overall state of the industry, recommended a tech strategy for improving its customer experience and fostering long-term growth, and gave a 12-minute presentation of their findings. A total of five teams participated, including two from IISE, two from PurdueTHINK, and one from Purdue Solutions. An IISE team won first place, with two PurdueTHINK teams winning second and third place.

But the academic year is only halfway done. "We will be continuing to expand next semester as well, and have strong recruiting plans in place to ensure PurdueTHINK will have a strong reputation on campus for years to come," said Stuff.
