Christopher Bowman named 2026 Distinguished Engineering Alumnus
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Christopher Bowman, a pioneer in polymer science and a leader in chemical engineering research, has been named a 2026 Distinguished Engineering Alumnus by Purdue University’s College of Engineering.
Bowman earned his Bachelor of Science and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from Purdue in 1988 and 1991, respectively. He is the Distinguished Professor and James and Catherine Patten Endowed Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder.
His research has led to high-impact advancements in polymer science, particularly in the design and synthesis of advanced materials with applications across medicine, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Bowman’s work has contributed to innovations in photopolymerization, biomaterials, and responsive polymer systems.
Bowman’s contributions to science and engineering have been recognized at the highest levels. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors and the National Academy of Medicine — a distinction held by a limited number of researchers whose work spans engineering, innovation and health.
The Distinguished Engineering Alumni/Alumnae Award is among the highest honors bestowed by Purdue Engineering, recognizing graduates who have made significant contributions to their professions and society.
