Dr. Julie C. Liu, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, was selected by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Women in Chemical Engineering Community (WIC) for the Mentorship Excellence Award in Academia in mid-November. This award recognizes women who have contributed to the development of the next generation of chemical engineers through outstanding mentoring. Dr. Liu received $500 and was recognized at the WIC Luncheon during the 2022 AIChE meeting.

During her 15 years at Purdue, Dr. Liu has mentored 15 PhD students (including 12 women and 2 underrepresented minorities), 2 MS students, and 44 undergraduates.

“Mentoring students in research is one of the best parts of my job, and I'm honored to receive this award,” Liu said. “I love the enthusiasm that students bring to their research, and it is rewarding to watch students develop into independent scientists and engineers.”

Dr. Liu received her B.S.E. in chemical engineering from Princeton University and Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Liu's research focuses on developing protein-based biomaterials for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and surgical glue applications.
