Dr. Julie Liu, Associate Professor in the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, has been selected as a 2019-2020 Fellow in Drexel University's Executive Leadership in Academic Technology, Engineering and Science (ELATES at Drexel®) program.

ELATES is a unique professional leadership program, designed to advance senior women faculty in academic engineering, computer science, and other STEM fields, preparing them to assume institutional leadership roles within their schools and universities.

The ELATES program consists of three week-long, in-residence sessions, online and conference call discussions, and institutional action project development, which will be mentored by senior administrative leaders at the participants’ institutions.

The incoming 2019-2020 Class of Fellows includes 22 women faculty from 19 different institutions across the U.S. and Canada. All are leaders in biology, computer and information sciences, geology, mathematics, and diverse engineering disciplines.

Selection for ELATES consists of a rigorous process which indicates the candidate’s evidence for leadership potential through submission of an application and supporting documents; nomination by a senior official within the college or school, usually the dean or provost; and two recommendations essays.

One of Dr. Liu’s goals is to lead a collaborative and interdisciplinary research group in musculoskeletal tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. She plans to build a community of faculty working in this research area from across campus.

Dr. Liu's research focuses on developing protein-based biomaterials for application in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, specifically for cartilage engineering and surgical glues. Dr. Liu holds a courtesy appointment in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University.
