Society is increasingly relying on simulation to make policy decisions and therefore needs significantly

more quantitative assessment of the prediction uncertainty than has been available . This need for quantitative

validation and uncertainty quantification of computer simulations requires a new level collaboration

between measurements and simulations as well as a new level of cooperation and communication

between stakeholders in the decision making process. While the U.S. has abundant resources in coal, oil

shale and oil sands deposits, the ability to responsibly utilize these resources for either power generations

or for transportation is increasingly dependent on a complex set of multidisciplinary issues. The Institute

for Clean and Secure Energy (ICSE) at the University of Utah is a $7million/year research program focused

on performing research on the technical, environmental and policy issues associated with the utilization

of these three hydrocarbon resources. This presentation will review the institutes multidisciplinary

research aimed at quantified predictivity and associated policy decisions.
