The 18th C.W. Lovell Distinguished Lecture will be held on Friday, November 3rd at 4:30pm in Room 121 of the Burton Morgan Building. Edward Kavazanjian, Jr., Regents' Professor and the Ira A. Fulton Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Arizona State University, will lecture on "GEO-Alchemy: Biogeotechnical Carbonate Precipitation for Hazard Mitigation and Ground Improvement."

Julio Ramirez appointed to VA structural safety advisory committee

Julio Ramirez, Karl H. Kettelhut Professor in Civil Engineering and Director of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Network Coordination Office (NCO) Center, has accepted a 2-year appointment to serve as a Special Government Employee (SGE) member of the Advisory Committee on Structural Safety of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Facilities.

Purdue researchers develop a new type of intelligent architected materials for industry applications

A team of researchers led by Pablo Zavattieri, the Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in Civil Engineering, have developed patent-pending intelligent architected materials that can dissipate energy caused by bending, compression, torque and tensile stresses, avoiding permanent plastic deformation or damage, and may also exhibit shape memory properties that allow them to have actuation capacity.

Ernest (Chip) Blatchley, Lee A. Rieth Professor in Environmental Engineering and Professor in Environmental and Ecological Engineering, has started a 2-year term as President-Elect of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA). This will be followed by a 2-year term as President.

David Restrepo receives NSF CAREER Award

David Restrepo (PhD 2015), Assistant Professor and Endowed Faculty Fellow in Mechanical Engineering at the Univ. of Texas San Antonio, has been awarded a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his groundbreaking work on elastic micro-buckling in periodic architected materials. As a result of this award, Restrepo will receive $641,398 in funding over the next five years.

Reza Moini (PhD 2020), Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University, has been awarded the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award to understand and engineer a new generation of concrete composites, inspired by naturally tough materials such as bone and mother-of-pearl, to allow more resilient and efficient infrastructure.

Lance Parson receives National Defense & Security Engineering Graduate Fellowship

PhD student Lance Parson has been selected to receive the 2023 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Award. This highly prestigious award, which provides full tuition and fees coverage plus additional stipends for up to three years, was established in 1989 by direction of congress as an approach to increasing the number U.S. citizens receiving doctoral degrees in science and engineering disciplines of military importance.
