Professor receives Faculty Excellence Advising Award

Professor C. Douglas Sutton has been awarded the Purdue College of Engineering Faculty Advising Excellence Award for his impact of nurturing students to successful professional careers with especially cogent personal and academic advising.

Professor C. Douglas Sutton has been awarded the Purdue College of Engineering Faculty Advising Excellence Award for his impact of nurturing students to successful professional careers with especially cogent personal and academic advising. The 5th annual Engineering Faculty Recognition Banquet will be held April 28, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. in the Stadium Shively Club to honor Professor Sutton along with other engineering faculty.   Please contact the College of Engineering at (765) 494-5345 for reservations which are required.

For more than forty years Professor Sutton has taught courses at all levels in mechanics, structural analysis, structural design and experimental analysis. Recognizing the importance of contact with undergraduate students, Professor Sutton formally counsels up to 30 undergraduate students and several graduate students each year.  Due to his outstanding reputation as a teacher, advisor, and mentor, a significant number of additional students seek out Professor Sutton for informal advice and guidance.  His excellence in advising has been previously recognized by his receipt of the 2000 and 2004 Ross Judson Buck advising awards from the School of Civil Engineering.

Professor Sutton has been actively involved at the highest levels of faculty governance at Purdue, always focusing on teaching and learning. He served on the University Senate continuously from 1988-1999, serving as chair in during the 1991-92 academic year.  Professor Sutton has also been active in both professional and honorary societies.  Of particular note, the Purdue Chapter of Chi Epsilon, the Civil Engineering Honorary Society, in recognition of his involvement, elected him as a Chapter Trustee in 1996 and Chapter Honor Member in 2001.

Professor Sutton of the structures engineering specialty group in Civil has been honored for his leadership in the engineering field by being named a Titan for the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI).   He also been named a fellow of the institute and has received the PCI Distinguished Educator Award.  He is a fellow of the Purdue University Teaching Academy and has received the following awards for his outstanding teaching: Charles B. Murphy Award, Dean A. A. Potter Award, Roy E. and Myrna Wansik Teaching Award, the Harold R. Munson Teaching Award, and the Edmund M. Burke Outstanding Civil Engineering Professor Award.
