On September 27th the Board of Trustees ratified the appointment of Dr. W. Jason Weiss as the Jack and Kay Hockema Professor of Civil Engineering.
On September 27th the Board of Trustees ratified the appointment of Dr. W Jason Weiss as the Jack and Kay Hockema Professor of Civil Engineering. 
 
Dr. Weiss received his BAE from Penn State in 1995 and his MS and PhD in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University in 1997 and 1999 respectively.  He joined the Purdue faculty in 1999, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004, and was promoted to Professor in 2007.  He served the school as assistant and associate head from 2005 to 2009.  Since 2009 he has been the Director of the Pankow Materials Laboratories, currently holds a courtesy appointment in Materials Engineering.  
 
Dr. Weiss maintains an active research group that includes research in the area of reducing early age cracking in concrete with an emphasis on using shrinkage reducing admixtures and internal curing, the development of innovative sensing and testing techniques for fluid transport and cracking, the service life prediction for concrete, and performance specifications for concrete.  He has authored over 250 publications with over 110 archival journal publications.  He has made over 250 presentations at university and industry seminars, and conferences.  Thirty masters students and fourteen PhD students have earned their degree under his guidance, and he is currently advising or co-advising ten graduate students.  
 
Dr. Weiss has received external recognition for his research including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2002), the Bengt Frieburg Award for the Best Paper by a Young Author in Concrete Pavements (2005), the Transportation Research Board Burgraff Best Paper Award (2006), the ACI Young Member Award (2007), the Transportation Research Board Mather Best Paper Award (2006 and 2008), RILEM L'Hermite Medal (2008), the University Faculty Scholar (2008-2013), the ACI Wason Best Paper Award (2009), the ESCSI Erskine Award (2010), and the ASCE Huber Prize (2011). Dr. Weiss was named the editor in chief of the RILEM Materials and Structures Journal (2011).  He is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute and has been a member of Editorial Board for the ASCE Journal of Civil Engineering Materials and Cement and Concrete Research. He has also served the American Concrete Institute and the Transportation Research Board as a committee chair (for the Research and Concrete Materials and Placement Committee respectively) and RILEM in various leadership roles including committee chair (Concrete Cracking and Durability) and Bureau member.
 
Dr. Weiss has demonstrated excellence in teaching.  He has been the recipient of the Wansik (2001, 2005, 2006, 2013), Munson (2002, 2008), Buck (2007), and Burke (2004) awards for outstanding teaching/advising in the school of civil engineering, has received the Potter award (2010) for outstanding teaching in the college of engineering, was awarded the Walter P Moore Jr. faculty award (2003) from the American Concrete Institute and has been inducted into the Purdue Teaching Academy (2012).
