Dr. Vince Drnevich and  co-authors (Salim K. Werden, John R. Hall, Jr., Chafik Hankour, Carolyn T. Conlee, and W. Allen Marr) have been chosen as recipients of the 2014 Hogentogler Award. The award is presented for their paper entitled, "New Approach to Resonant Column Testing," appearing in the March 2013 edition of the ASTM Geotechnical Testing Journal.

 

The Hogentogler Award is presented to the author(s) of an ASTM paper of outstanding merit on soil or rock. It recognizes meritorious effort and it is the most prestigious technical award given by Committee D18. The ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock presents this award annually.

 

This work is an excellent example of collaboration among academia (Purdue and Worcester Poly) and industry (Geocomp Corporation) and involves a Geocomp physicist (Salim Werden), electrical engineer (Chafik Hancour), lab engineer (Carolyn Conlee), and president (Allen Marr); a structural engineer from Worcester Poly (Jack Hall), and a geotechnical engineer (Vince Drnevich).

 

This is the second time that Dr. Drnevich has won the Hogentogler Award.  The first time was in 1979 for the paper, "Modulus and Damping of Soils by the Resonant Column Method," co-authored with B.O. Hardin and D.J. Shippy, all at the University of Kentucky. It was the basis for the first D4015 Standard with the same name as the paper.  The New Approach paper is the basis for a major revision to D4015 which went to Subcommittee Ballot this week.  Both Awards are on the same topic. "There is no telling what can happen when a team like this was having fun," says Vince Drnevich about receiving the award for this 2013 paper. "You might say that after 35 years, it was about time for a new approach."
