The Purdue University board of trustees on Friday, May 18 2007, approved the appointment of M. Katherine Banks as the Bowen Engineering Head of Civil Engineering.

It has been a successful end of the semester for the geotech group at Purdue. Three graduate students, Yiannis Zevgolis, Oliver Colic and Wen-Chao Huang, were honored by the College of Engineering as “outstanding students” for their contributions to their Schools and the College.

The steel bridge competition on April 28, 2007 was one of many contests held during the ASCE Great Lakes Regional Conference. The steel bridge event involved ten schools competing with their bridges that they had designed and fabricated over the course of the year.

Engineering Professional Education (ProEd) will deliver an innovative program for those interested in exploring the geo-spatial complexities of the earth with the launch of an online specialization in Geomatics starting August 2007.

Robert L. Bowen, BSCE 1962, founder and owner of Bowen Engineering Corp., a multi-market company specializing in water and wastewater treatment plants and energy utility construction, received his honorary doctoral degree at the 2007 spring commencement.

The Purdue University chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sponsored the 2007 Great Lakes Regional Conference. The concrete canoe races is one of many events held during this conference.

Sarah M. Hubbard, graduate student, was recently selected by the Eno Transportation Foundation for the ‘Eno Fellows’ Class of 2007, a group of exceptionally promising graduate and doctoral students who plan to pursue careers in transportation. Eno Fellows are invited to participate in the Foundation’s Leadership Development Conference (LDC), an intensive week-long professional development program held each spring in Washington, D.C.

Professor Kumares C. Sinha, Olson Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, has been appointed to serve on a Blue Ribbon Panel of Experts for the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Commission created by Congress.

Professor Emeritus Jack Delleur is the recipient of the 2007 Ray K. Linsley Award. This award was established in 1986 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions in surface water hydrology.

A team of six traveled to India on a World Bank mission to review and make recommendations for the planning, design and construction aspects of national highway development program in India.

Andrzej M. Kwasniak, Anuj Sharma and Joshua Zvolanek are the 2007/2008 recipients of the ITE Indiana Section E.J. Cox Memorial Transportation Scholarship Award.

Research has revealed that approximately 511.3 km2 of the earth's surface was submerged.

An interdisciplinary group of researchers at Purdue University have found that adding small quantities of bentonite to fine sands reduces the risk of liquefaction. This NSF collaborative research project includes Purdue Civil Engineering Professors Antonio Bobet, Vincent P. Drnevich and Marika C. Santagata, Professor Cliff T. Johnston, Agronomy, and Professor Alexander Wei, Chemistry.

HNTB Inc. placed third in the Annual ACEC National Grand Conceptor Award competition for their Perry St. Bridge project in Napoleon, Ohio.

The School of Civil Engineering honored seven outstanding graduates with the Civil Engineering Alumni Achievement Award in a ceremony held on February 15, 2007.
