Purdue Global Ambassador Tolulope Omotoso's research aims at improving knowledge on the nexus and trade-offs between water, energy and food resources using the important food and energy producing state of Niger in Nigeria as a case study.

CE doctoral student Seyed Ali Ghahari was recently selected by the World Bank to represent Purdue, as a student volunteer and participant, in the 2017 Annual Youth Summit at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, DC. Ali was one of nearly 400 participants and volunteers at the 2017 Youth Summit, and chosen from a high-caliber pool of approximately 2,900 applicants from around the world representing 70+ countries and members of the public, private and academic sectors.

A team in earthquake-prone Seattle is daring to deliver an 850-ft-tall "proof of concept" for a composite structural-steel frame, instead of a steel frame around a reinforced concrete core. The $570-million Rainier Square Tower project is the culmination of three decades of exploration into composite steel structures for CE alumnus Ron Klemencic, with research being conducted at Bowen Laboratory since 2006.

The Purdue transportation student team Boiler Hackers (Xinwu Qian, Wenbo Zhang, Shubham Agarwal, and Hemant Gehlot) recently won the 2016-2017 IATR HACK-A-THON final competition. Their winning proposal involved serving autonomous electric taxis at existing urban parking facilities.

Robert Frosch, Professor of Civil Engineering, has been named Editor-in-Chief of the ACI Structural Journal Editorial Board. The ACI Structural Journal has been publishing research on the design of structural concrete from many of the brightest minds in the concrete industry since ACI began publishing journals back in December 1912.

Through funding awarded by the DOE ARPA-E IDEAS program, the electric roadways study will analyze freight and passenger vehicle corridors in lower Los Angeles County and evaluate in-road inductive wireless and overhead conductive electric roadway technology solutions.

Robert J. Connor, Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of CAI and S-BRITE, has been selected as the winner of the 2018 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship Award. Presented annually, the award recognizes a lecturer and author whose technical paper or papers, published during the eligibility period, are considered an outstanding contribution to engineering literature on fabricated structural steel.

The Board of Trustees has approved the naming of Darcy Bullock as the Lyles Family Professor of Civil Engineering. Bullock joined Purdue in 1998 as a civil engineering faculty member. He has been honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Transportation Research Board and was named a Purdue University Faculty Scholar, 2005-2010.

NSF announces $3.6M to a multidisciplinary Purdue team as one of the first-ever awards through the Smart & Connected Communities program seeking to address transportation, infrastructure, health and other rural and urban challenges.

Satish Ukkusuri, Professor of Civil Engineering, is one of the select group invited to attend the fifth Arab-American Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium, presented by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Manuel Garcia-Lopez has dedicated his academic and professional life to the study, research, and development of geotechnics. He has taught for 52 consecutive years at Universidad Nacional in Colombia and approximately 45 years at the university he co-founded, Escuela Colombiana de Ingenieria. A major building block of his successful career were his Masters studies in soil mechanics and foundation engineering at Purdue.

Chinese war hero and U.S. ally Sun Li-jen, known as "the ever-victorious general" for his feats in World War II, was recently recognized on the floor of the U.S. Congress. Sun Li-jen was also one of our school's earliest international students, graduating with a degree in civil engineering from Purdue in 1924.

PhD student Yining Feng has been selected to attend the Polsky Center Women in STEM Leadership Conference at the University of Chicago on October 27th.

PhD student Jessica Eisma has completed a one-year project studying sand dams in Tanzania. In 2016, Eisma was awarded a pair of prestigious research grants — totaling more than $45,000 — from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and the U.S. Borlaug Fellows in Global Food Security Program to study the ecological impact of sand dams in Tanzania. She flew to Africa in August 2016 to begin her study, which is the basis for her doctoral thesis.
