Purdue researchers return from East Palestine after derailment

A Purdue CE research team is back in town after a trip to the site of the Norfolk Southern train derailment. The team, led by CE/EEE Professor Andrew Whelton and several students, collected water samples from creeks and homes in East Palestine, Ohio, where a train derailed and spilled hazardous materials like vinyl chloride.

Purdue named national transportation center by USDOT

Purdue University, led by Prof. Satish Ukkusuri, will partner with a consortium led by Clemson University funded by a $4 million/year grant with a focus on transportation cybersecurity and resilience. The center will develop foundational tools and methods to test and mitigate cybersecurity risks in infrastructure systems.

Pablo Zavattieri, Jerry M. and Lynda T. Engelhardt Professor in Civil Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The Fellow grade of membership recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to ASME.

Douglas M. Owen (BSCE '80), senior principal at Stantec, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to drinking water quality, expansion of potable reuse and integration of sustainability in water treatment plant design.

Ayhan Irfanoglu, Professor and Associate Head of the Lyles School of Civil Engineering, will be surveying the impact of the recent earthquake in Turkey this week with an advance reconnaissance team dispatched jointly by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) and Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association (GEER).

At the request of two Colorado cities shortly following the Marshall Fire, Purdue University researchers led by Andrew Whelton provided onsite technical assistance and studied the scientific and policy needs specific to drinking water systems' resilience to wildfires. The goal was to better understand the decisions, resources, expertise and response limitations during and after the wildfire.
