ASCE Establishes Halpin Construction Award
The American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) proudly announces establishment of the Daniel W. Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction, named in honor of the world-renowned expert on the use of simulation in studying construction processes. Nominations are invited for the inaugural presentation. This award is open to members of ASCE or the Construction Institute who have attained a doctoral degree within the last ten years and who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship that advances construction engineering as a science. The award consists of a certificate, a cash prize and the opportunity to present the Daniel W. Halpin Address at a meeting of the ASCE.
Daniel W. Halpin, professor emeritus and retired Bowen Head of the Division of Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University, is a 1961 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received the MSCE and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1969 and 1973. He is the developer of the CYCLONE simulation system, which is used to simulate and study construction processes. The system is used worldwide by construction researchers and educators. His contributions have led to construction simulation becoming an essential part of university construction engineering curricula. He was elected by ASCE to Distinguished Membership (Dist.M.ASCE) in 2006.
Prior to taking the position as Head of the Division of Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue, he was a member of the Civil Engineering faculty at Georgia Tech and the Clark Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the U. of Maryland. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich , and the University of Sydney in Australia.
His basic textbook, Construction Management, published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc. has been one of the two or three dominant texts introducing engineering students to the concepts of construction engineering over the past 25 years. He has authored or co-authored 11 books. Various editions of these texts have been translated into Chinese, German, Portuguese and Spanish.
