Check with insurance carriers and transfer if needed (car insurance rules and laws differ by state). Be prepared to update your rental or homeowners insurance if needed.
Create a packet of all important medical, legal and financial documents.
Arrange to have records, such as school and medical, transferred if needed.
One Month Before Moving
Change your legal address and forward your mail Change of Address Form. Notify important contacts of your new address.
Cancel all existing utilities and get utilities set up at your new address. When canceling, make sure you give a forwarding address for final invoices.
Cancel automatic payment plans and cancel/transfer memberships such as health clubs, organizations and groups.
See if your bank has a local branch. If not, plan accordingly by opening a new bank account. If you have automatic electronic payment, make sure to update it with your new account and banking institution. Empty your safe deposit box (if applicable).
Take your vehicle(s) in for a tune-up.
Make sure all of your prescriptions are filled and transfer all prescriptions to a local drug store.
Moving In
Verify utilities are working and old residence utilities have been paid and canceled.
