CoE students shine in entrepreneurship competition

An environmentally friendly solid rocket propellant and a blood oxygenation monitoring device won big at the Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition Feb. 23, in Discovery Park.

Brandon Terry, a doctoral graduate in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and Luciano Mozzone, an undergraduate in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, are members of Adranos Energetics LLCC, which took the top $30,000 prize in the Gold Division. The Adranos team plans to develop rocket fuel for aviation and aerospace industries that could minimize HCI aerosol formation while simultaneously increasing total propulsion. The novel fuel technology was developed in Zucrow Laboratories by the research group of Steven Son, professor of mechanical engineering.

Three engineering undergraduates received the $20,000 top prize in the Black Division for HemoTherm, a device they are developing to monitor real-time blood oxygenation levels for hemodynamically stable and unstable patients. The device would treat hypothermia by controlling patients’ core body temperatures. The HemoTherm team members are Tori Clift and Stephanie Eichman, both seniors in biomedical engineering, and Sahil Sanghani, a senior in electrical and computer engineering.
